The lead uppercut has less hip rotation to call upon. Power it by pushing off and straightening your lead leg. The angle of your arm is more acute, as your are nearer your opponent.

Lead uppercut to the head

  1. Stay in guard.

  2. Transfer weight to your lead foot.

  3. Push off your lead foot, straightening your lead leg.

  4. Turn your lead hip and shoulders towards your opponent.

  5. Pull your rear shoulder and hip away from your opponent

  6. Punch upwards, rotating your fist palm inwards before impact.

  7. Return to guard.

Concentrate on your:

  • lead hand — don’t drop it to wind up the punch

  • lead elbow — don’t throw it back to wind up the punch

  • rear hand — protect your chin

  • rear arm — protect your body

Lead uppercut to the body

The technique for the lead hook to the body is the same as the one to the head. Aim for the solar plexus — or the “bread basket” as my coach often called it.

Boxing-mad Mexicans don’t award legendary status to just anyone. Juan Manuel Márquez earned it the hard way. He fought the very best of his era, including Marco Antonio Barrera, Floyd Mayweather Jr and four epics with Manny Pacquiao. Known for his sharp counters, Marquez throws a textbook lead uppercut to head and body.
