Body pads, paddles and sticks
Body pad
A body pad (or protector) lets the boxer throw combinations that include body punches. The pad holder needn’t worry about getting the pads down in time. Body pads are a great investment if you can afford one.
Paddles and sticks
Paddles and sticks have become popular in recent times. The handle design works as a shock absorber. This is good for the pad holder, but I’m not convinced it’s good for the boxer. Your muscles become accustomed to what they hit in subtle ways. A target that offers more give on impact could change the punch dynamic. I have a cheap pair, but use them for defensive reflex drills.
Lengths of pipe insulation do a similar job. I use these for bag work. It’s a great way of probing at defences as my boxer works. If I am being honest, I find it very satisfying. Is it childish to find joy in swatting at your friends with Polyethylene foam? Yes. Yes, it is.
Punch shield
The punch shield (also known as a punch cushion) is a circular pad with a handle on each side. The design makes it an excellent tool to develop power punching.
